We all love color and we surround ourselves with our favorite colors, in our clothes, our homes, our cars, and our officesColors can be soothing to our spirits, make us feel happy or sad, or give us energy.  We can send silent messages to the people around us just by the colors we choose for ourselves.

But, there is a problem with dye because it contains toxic heavy metals such as chrome, copper and zinc.   Yes, I know these metals are all natural but that doesn't make them any less toxic! Sometimes, dyes also contain known or suspected carcinogensCotton has a natural resistance to dyes and because of that most of the chemicals used in the process of dyeing end up as waste in our rivers and soil.  And dyes run, soaking into our bodies even if they are said to be colorfast!  So all those toxic heavy metals end up wreaking havoc in our bodies, by building up.

Natural dyes would be a good alternative but they are not colorfast and so a mordant must be used to make them colorfast.  The mordant has the same toxic heavy metals!

Low impact dyes are being used more and more because of the ability of the material to soak up almost all of the dye which greatly reduces the run off of the dye.  The key words here are, "almost all,"  So, our bodies are still getting a dose of the toxic heavy  metals albeit a much less amount.

The only real solution is to use organic cotton cloth that has not been dyed or chemically treated in any way.  The bad news is we will miss our colors.  But the good news is we will be healthy!  And organic cotton can be raised that is naturally brown, or green.  There are internet sites that sell organic cotton bedding and clothing as well as pure wool and even natural hemp. This is the wave of the future!
